CFP-BUSY
- The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau more than doubled its caseload in 2015, compared to a year earlier, according to the agency’s enforcement director. Last year, the CFPB settled 59 cases and had 11 cases that led to lawsuits, compared with 23 settlements and 11 lawsuits in 2014 and 21 settlements and seven lawsuits in 2013. The increase in activity is a result of staffing increases, according to the director, who declined to say whether the rate of growth in activity would be similar in 2016.
AN OVERDUE LIBRARY PROPOSAL
- Legislation has been proposed in Wisconsin that would allow libraries to send information about people with overdue books to collection agencies. Under the proposed law, anyone with an overdue balance over $50 could have their contact information and account information shared with collection agencies. Librarians are saying the measure is long overdue.
A TAX ON ALL YOUR HOUSES
- An objective and balanced analysis of the plan that will require the Internal Revenue Service to outsource some collections to third-party collection agencies. Some critics complain that outsourcing could make it easier for scammers to defraud consumers, but those in favor of the plan point to the $380 billion in unpaid collections as sufficient need to move forward.
