BLAMING CLIENT NOT A VALID EXCUSE
- A New Jersey law firm’s motion to have a case dismissed because it acted on the faulty evidence provided by the firm’s client has been turned down. The firm, Stern, Lavinthal and Frankenberg, “cannot evade its responsibilities as a debt collector by blaming its client for providing it with factually inaccurate information used in the process of collecting a debt,” the judge wrote.

- Maria T. Vullo has been named superintendent of the New York Department of Financial Services. She was working as a lawyer at the firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison and had previously worked for Gov. Andrew Cuomo when he was attorney general of New York.
OHIO CITY HIRES COLLECTION AGENCY
- The city of Youngstown, Ohio has hired Municipal Collections of America to collect on unpaid civil speeding violations. The agency will get to keep 25% of what it collects. About 52% of the 5,000 citations that have been issued since the program went into effect last August have been paid.
