LAWMAKERS CALL FOR CHANGE WITHOUT OFFERING SUGGESTIONS
- A group of lawmakers used a report issued by an advocacy group to call on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to “crack down” on unscrupulous debt collection practices. But, isn’t the CFPB already attempting to do that with it’s proposed debt collection rule? And, it should be noted, this particular group of lawmakers – from the state of Connecticut – offered not a single idea or solution to what the CFPB should do.
RUSSIAN DEBT COLLECTORS GOING MEDIEVAL
- Debt collectors in Russia are turning to violence in trying to collect on unpaid debts as the country’s economy has stagnated. The Russian equivalent of payday lenders appear to be the largest culprits for escalating the methods of collections to include firebombs and murder-suicides. The amount of unpaid debt grew by nearly 50% in 2015 in Russia, and the violence has led lawmakers to consider banning debt collectors in the country.
UTILITY STOPS MAKING CALLS
- The Board of Public Works in Hannibal, Missouri has stopped making courtesy calls to customers with delinquent accounts in order not to run afoul of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. The utility will now take the step of obtaining written consent from its customers so it can resume making the calls.
