FTC ALLEGES NETWORK OF COMPANIES COLLECTED, SOLD PORTFOLIOS OF PHANTOM PAYDAY LOANS
- The Federal Trade Commission yesterday, in conjunction with the Attorney General of Illinois, obtained a court order from a federal judge that temporarily halted the actions of a number of companies that were alleged to not only be collecting on phantom payday loans, but selling portfolios of fake loans as well. The actions were taken under Operation Collection Protection, a joint law enforcement initiative aimed at tackling abusive debt collectors.
ACLU SUES EDUCATION DEPARTMENT FOR COLLECTION PAPERWORK
- The American Civil Liberties Union and the National Consumer Law Center are suing the Department of Education in federal court, asking the government agency to turn over documents that detail how the government collects on defaulted student loans. The groups are alleging that the Education Department is violating the Freedom of Information Act by not turning the information over. The groups are looking for racial disparities, while the Department says it does not track that data.
COLLECTION PROBLEMS PLAGUING LOCAL LIBRARIES
- A profile of the San Jose Public Library, which has uncollected debts totaling $7 million. Cardholders with more than $10 in outstanding debts are barred from taking out materials, a policy which some feel disproportionately affects lower-income residents of the city.
