BANKRUPTCY FILINGS DECLINE, BUT PACE OF DECLINE MAY BE LEVELING OFF
- Bankruptcy filings for the first three months of 2016 were 5% lower than the same quarter of last year, according to data released by the American Bankruptcy Institute. Commercial bankruptcy filings, however, were up 24% year-over-year. The rate of decline in overall bankruptcy filings is starting to slow, indicating that filings are leveling off, according to the ABI.
UNIVERISTY ROLLS OUT FINANCIAL AID PACKAGE BASED ON FUTURE EARNINGS
- Students at Purdue University will have the chance to apply for financial aid in exchange for a percentage of their future earnings. Instead of obtaining loans, students will pledge a future portion of their expected income. The downside is that if a student obtains a higher-paying job than expected, the could repay more than what they would have had they obtained a standard student loan.
STUDY REVEALS HIGHER PERCENTAGE OF POOR AND MINORITY CONSUMERS AFFECTED BY DRIVER’S LICENSE SUSPENSIONS
- A higher percentage of low-income consumers end up having their driver’s licenses suspended because of unpaid court costs or fines, according to a study conducted in California. The geographic concentration of licenses suspensions is higher in lower-income neighborhoods, and the study also revealed that black residents are arrested at a higher percentage than other races for court-issued warrants for failing to appear in court. In San Francisco, for example, blacks represent 6% of the total population, but account for nearly half of court-issued warrants.
