ONTARIO SYSTEMS ACQUIRES COLUMBIA ULTIMATE
- Ontario Systems announced yesterday that it had acquired Columbia Ultimate Business Systems, which will join two of the collection industry’s largest software providers. Ontario’s largest presence is in the healthcare industry while Columbia Ultimate is a player in the state and local government space. More details about the acquisition are to be released at this week’s ACA International conference in Denver, the companies said.
BILL INTRODUCED TO AMEND FDCPA TO INCLUDE DEBTS OWED TO FEDERAL GOVERNMENTS
- A bill has been introduced in the House of Representatives to amend the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, which, for the most part, seeks to include how federal government agencies work with third-party debt collectors. The bill, introduced by Rep. Mia Love [R-Utah], also commissions an annual study from the General Accountability Office that assesses the relationship between collection agencies and federal, state, and local governments.
MORE CONSUMERS EXPECT TO MISS DEBT PAYMENTS IN NEXT THREE MONTHS
- More consumers expect to miss a debt payment in the next three months, according to a survey released by the Federal Reserve Board of New York. Consumers also expect the unemployment rate to rise and their financial situation to worsen during the next 12 months.
FCC CONSUMER ADVISORY COMMITTEE APPROVES TCPA PROPOSED RULE
- The Federal Communications Commission’s Consumer Advisory Committee has given its stamp of approval on a proposed rule that would allow debt collectors to use autodialer technology to contact the mobile phones of individuals with debts that are owed to, or guaranteed by, the federal government. Among the recommendations made by the committee are that the FCC should work with other agencies to ensure that consumers will not have to navigate different requirements, and that a more protective call limit should be proposed because consumers may have more than one debt in collections and could receive more than the three-call limit.
