- An interesting story making the rounds during the past few days: A New Jersey student loan agency refused to forgive or defer the student loans for a murdered individual, forcing the mother, who co-signed for the loans, to repay the balance. She has made 18 payments and has 92 more to go. There are other stories that illustrate how strict this particular agency is with forcing individuals to repay their loans, regardless of their economic circumstance. One man, who was diagnosed with cancer and lost his job, was sued for $266,000 in unpaid student loans.
TRIAL AGAINST FORMER COLLECTION AGENCY OWNER ACCUSED OF DEFRAUDING $4 MILLION BEGINS TODAY
- Jury selection begins today in a case against John Williams, a former owner of a collection agency who is charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The agency was raided and shut down nearly two years ago, but Williams has pleaded not guilty to attempting to defraud more than 6,000 individuals and collecting more than $4 million in misrepresented debt payments
N.C. AGENCY PROMOTES NEW CEO
- DataMax Corp., a North Carolina-based collection agency, has promoted Lisa Venable to CEO. She has spent the past 10 years as the firm’s chief financial officer. She is replacing Robert Egleston, who is moving on to run a community leadership organization.
CITIES DEALING WITH LOTS OF UNPAID FINES
- A pair of cities are dealing with debt collection problems. The city of McAllen, Texas, did not collect nearly $1 million in unpaid parking fines during the past six years, according to a recently conducted audit. The city is looking at hiring a collection agency to recover unpaid fines. The city of Summerside, Prince Edward Island – in Canada – is owed more than $1.3 million in unpaid utility bills. The town is working on a policy to determine if, and when, collection agencies should be hired to recover those unpaid bills.
