PAYDAY LENDER HARASSING REPORTER FOR PAYMENT ON NON-EXISTENT LOAN
- In a textbook case of how not to respond to a major media outlet’s request for comment, a payday lender has started sending emails to a reporter from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution attempting to collect an non-existent debt and has threatened legal action and criminal charges for non-payment. The reporter had originally reached out to the company for comment about allegations it was harassing individuals into making payments. The lender is not responding to phone calls from the reporter, but has now sent two separate emails demanding payment.

FCC HOSTS FIRST ROBOCALL STRIKE FORCE MEETING
- The “Strike Force” team assembled by the Federal Communications Commission to eliminate robocalls had its first meeting in mid-August. The team is chaired by Randall Stephenson, the CEO of AT&T, and the first meeting was also attended by Tom Wheeler, the chairman of the FCC, and two FCC commissioners, one Democrat and one Republican. The Strike Force will meet next on Oct. 19. ACA International said it was “cautiously optimistic” that the Strike Force will understand and be able to differentiate between scams and legitimate attempts to contact individuals.
BANKS COULD FACE RICO CLAIMS FOR WORKING WITH PAYDAY LENDERS
- Banks that work with payday lenders may face RICO claims, following an Appeals Court ruling issued earlier this week. There are now different Appeals Court rulings, which means an appeal to the Supreme Court is now possible.
