CONSUMER ATTORNEY FINED $85K FOR NOT COMMUNICATING SETTLEMENT OFFER
- A lawyer who has represented consumers in 64 lawsuits alleging violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act has been forced to pay nearly $85,000 to the defendants in a case after he failed to communicate settlement offers to his client, according to a published report.
BUSINESS BANKRUPTCY FILINGS HELP BOOST TOTAL FILINGS UPWARD IN AUGUST
- The total number of personal and commercial bankruptcy filings increased 1% in August, compared with the same month last year, according to data from the American Bankruptcy Institute. Business filings increased 11% year-over-year while the number of consumer filings was almost exactly the same in the two months.
MORE DETAILS EMERGE OVER COLLECTION AGENCY’S FAILED AGREEMENT WITH SCHOOL BOARD
- More details are starting to emerge about the collection agency that has not remitted almost $200,000 to a Florida school board. CheckCare, the collection agency hired by the Palm Beach County school board to collect unpaid lunch fees, after-care programs, and other expenses, bounced the last check it remitted to the school board and has not been in contact for the past two weeks. The school board decided last week to move forward and file a lawsuit against the collection agency.
CONSUMER SPENDING GROWS $18 BILLION IN JULY
- Consumer spending continues to rise, and any economic growth may have to be carried on the backs of consumers. The amount of outstanding consumer credit increased by nearly $18 billion in July, which is $2 billion more than was expected. Adding to that was a revision in June’s numbers, which now indicate an increase of $14.5 billion, up from the original estimate of $12.3 billion, which was the lowest rate of growth in four years.
