IQOR, ALLIED INTERSTATE, SUED FOR $10 MILLION BY CALIF. DA FOR VIOLATING TCPA
- A district attorney in California has filed a $10 million lawsuit against iQor US Inc. and its subsidiary, Allied Interstate LLC, for allegedly using automated dialers to contact the cell phones of California residents. A number of other DA’s offices in California were also included in the lawsuit. One man, for example, received 126 calls in a one-month period.
RETAILER POSTS SIGN SHAMING DELINQUENT CUSTOMER
- A Canadian flooring retailer has taken the unusual step of publicly shaming a customer who owes $1,153.19 by posting the individual’s name and the amount owed on a large sign outside the store. A picture of the sign was posted on Reddit yesterday.
COLLECTION AGENCY GETS HOSTILE WHEN TV CREW TAKES UP CASE OF WOMAN RECEIVING PERSISTENT CALLS
- When a TV news crew took up the case of a North Carolina woman who was receiving calls from a debt collector looking to contact an individual who used to be married to one of her family members, the collection agency was the one to get hostile. Even though the woman says she has not had contact with the individual for more than 25 years, the collection agency representative who answered the phone when the news reporter called threatened legal action and that he “did not care” why the reporter was calling. Probably not the best media policy to have.

HOUSE COMMITTEE PASSES CFPB REFORM BILL
- The House Financial Services Committee has passed a bill out of committee that would overhaul the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The bill, which moves to the full House of Representatives for consideration, would rename the CFPB, replace the director with a bipartisan five-person commission, and would create an independent Solicitor General position. The bill was passed 30-26, with all Democrats on the committee voting against the bill and all but one Republican voting in favor of it.
