FAMILIES IN DEBT MORE LIKELY TO HAVE KIDS WITH MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS: STUDY

  • Children from low-income families with multiple debts are more likely to suffer from mental health disorders, according to a U.K. study that was released yesterday. The total number of debts, as opposed to the total amount owed, is what determines the severity of the mental health disorders. The charity that sponsored the study is calling for low-income families to receive a 12-month moratorium on debt collections to give them time to make arrangements to get out of debt.

LUNCH LADY QUITS OVER SCHOOL BOARD’S DEBT COLLECTION POLICY

  • A lunch lady in Pittsburgh has quit her job over a policy that required her to give children a different lunch if their outstanding balance was higher than $25. The woman was forced to take away chicken nuggets from a first grade student and give him a plain cheese sandwich instead. The Pennsylvania state association representing school boards advises that unpaid debts be sent to collection agencies.

MAN ROBBED TRYING TO COLLECT DEBT

  • This is why collectors don’t make house calls: A Virginia man who went to the house of female acquaintance to collect a debt was instead robbed in the stairwell of the woman’s building. Two men and the woman were ultimately arrested.

WISCONSIN TOWN FORMALIZES COLLECTION AGREEMENT

  • A town in Wisconsin has formalized an agreement with a local ambulance company that will allow the municipality to try and collect unpaid bills from ambulance rides. This will allow the municipality to collect debts from the tax returns of individuals who did not pay for the ambulance rides.
