LAWSUIT NUMBERS, CFPB COMPLAINTS CONTINUE CLIMBING
- The number of FDCPA lawsuits continues to drop while TCPA and FCRA lawsuits continues to climb, according to data released yesterday by WebRecon. While those trends have been continuing for some time, a new trend has emerged as the calendar inches closer to 2017. The number of complaints filed with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau against debt collection companies is close to eclipsing last year’s total, when it appeared a few months ago that the total would fall well short of the number of complaints filed in 2015.
GOVERNMENT GOING AFTER STUDENT LOANS IT PROMISED TO FORGIVE: REPORT
- The federal government continues to collect on “tens of thousands” of student loans from former students at Corinthian Colleges, even though many of those students are eligible to have their student loans wiped away and forgiven because they were misled, according to a published report.
WHO WILL REPLACE WHEELER ATOP FCC?
- Now that Thomas Wheeler, the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, has announced his resignation, talk has moved to who will replace him at the agency that, among other things, has oversight over the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. One published report floated a couple of names, both of whom would appear to be open to “enormous change” to TCPA regulation.
NEW TOOL HELPS HOSPITALS GET PAID FASTER
- An article about Payment Integrity Compass, a system that “takes data and claims information from insurance companies and looks at remits and payer contracts to generate a calculation of what should be paid.” The PIC helps hospitals appeal to insurers on underpaid or denied claims, and reducing the amount of time in knowing whether a claim is denied, allowing providers to start collections faster.
