VIRGINIA COURTS NOT REGULATED IN COLLECTING FINES, FEES FROM DRIVERS
- An unpaid traffic ticket in Virginia can lead to the suspension of a driver’s license, but how each court is allowed to set its own rules for payment plans and collection policies. That has led to more than 647,000 Virginians having their licenses suspended because they failed to pay the court fines. The state passed a law last year that requires courts to set up payment plans consistent with the state’s Supreme Court, only to learn that the state’s Supreme Court has no such rules in place.
AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT IN HOT WATER FOR SENDING OUT COLLECTION LETTERS
- A scandal is brewing Down Under, where the Australian Department of Human Services, known as Centrelink, has sent out 169,000 collection letters to individuals, many of which are attempting to collect debts that are not owed to the government. The problem has become so large that a website dedicated to people sharing their stories has been launched.
