NUMBER OF OLDER AMERICANS WITH STUDENT LOANS EXPLODES
- Now that I am off my high horse, let’s talk about a report from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau that details how the number of Americans over the age of 60 with student loans has quadrupled during the past decade. The amount those individuals owed doubled, on average, to $23,000. The rising student loan debt burden for older Americans is calling their retirement security into question.

- A former partner in a collection agency is now a member of the House Financial Services Committee. Rep. David Trott [R-N.Y.] was named to the committee by chairman Rep. Jeb Hensarling [R-Texas] yesterday. From ACA International: Before his election to Congress, Trott was a partner at Trott Recovery Services, PLLC, a debt collection law firm, and a managing partner at Trott & Trott, a foreclosure law firm in Michigan.
ROSENWORCEL RE-NOMINATED AS FCC COMMISSIONER; BUT CONFIRMATION IS UNLIKELY
- Perhaps for no other reason than solidarity, President Barack Obama has re-nominated Jessica Rosenworcel to be a commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission. A Democrat, Rosenworcel has been one of the five FCC’s commissioners since 2012. It appears unlikely that the Senate will consider her nomination before President-elect Trump takes office in two weeks.
JUDGE SUSPENDED FOR ETHICS VIOLATIONS STEMMING FROM COLLECTION ISSUES
- An Alabama judge has been found guilty of ethics violations, and suspended until this coming October, largely for not making sure defendants could afford to pay the fines he was meting out. The fines and the judge’s behavior led to five lawsuits filed against the city for unlawful collection practices.
