THE QUESTION EVERYONE WHO FOLLOWS THE CFPB IS ASKING
- The back-and-forth between Republicans and Democrats over the fate of Richard Cordray, the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, is reaching a frenzied pace as President-elect Trump is a little more than two days away from his inauguration. Yesterday, Sen. Chuck Schumer [D-N.Y.], one of the most powerful Democrats in Congress, endorsed Cordray and said that the president-elect would be going back on his promise of standing up for consumers and workers if Cordray were fired. Cordray may even go as far as to sue the administration if he is fired before his term ends, a number of Senators threatened. If he is fired, Cordray’s undoing may be that he did not read the political landscape well enough.
SUPREME COURT HEARS ARGUMENTS IN FDCPA CASE
- The Supreme Court heard oral arguments yesterday in a closely watched case that deals with the filing of valid claim of a time-barred debt during a bankruptcy proceeding. A ruling on the case, Johnson v. Midland Funding, is expected by the end of June. During yesterday’s proceedings, three of the justices considered to be more liberal appeared to side with the defendant, according to published reports, while a fourth, Justice Stephen Breyer, seemed to align more with the conservative members of the Court.
