Richard Cordray, the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, who’s job has become the ball in a game of political ping pong, said yesterday that he has no intention of stepping down from his job.
While the president has not made any decisions or even committed to a timeline for making a decision, Cordray said yesterday that his five-year term is intended to straddle presidential administrations in order to preserve the “independence” of his position.
“Without the independence, you end up mired in partisan politics,” Cordray said during an event sponsored by the Wall Street Journal. “The independence is an important principle that’s worth preserving.”
Republican lawmakers have called for President Trump to fire Cordray, an outcome that was made possible with a recent court decision that declared the original leadership structure of the CFPB to be unconstitutional.
