- New Mexico has become the first state to enact a law that tackles the topic of “lunch shaming,” where kids who can’t afford to pay for a school lunch are either denied food, given a different meal, or forced to perform tasks to pay off the debts. Many school districts have started placing unpaid lunch accounts with collection agencies, and that process will be allowed to continue in New Mexico as well. But agencies working on these types of accounts may want to prepare for calls from media outlets and may want to consider the publicity when bidding on these types of accounts going forward.
