DEBT COLLECTION ‘ABUSES’ LARGEST SOURCE OF COMPLAINTS BY MILITARY TO CFPB: REPORT
- Debt collection abuses are the largest source of complaints filed by members of the military with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, according to a report issued by U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) Eduction Fund. The report is very similar to others issued by the same group, which uses complaint data from the CFPB to highlight what it defines as issues with debt collectors and the debt collections industry in the U.S. Debt collection accounts for nearly one-third of complaints filed by members of the military, according to the report.
BANKRUPTCY FILINGS INCREASE IN MAY
- The number of bankruptcy filings in May was higher than a month earlier and the same month last year, according to data released by the American Bankruptcy Institute. Total filings were up 7% on a month-over-month basis and 5% from the same month last year. The states with the highest per-capita rates of filings were Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, Utah, and Mississippi.
DEBT CONSOLIDATION COMPANY PLANS TO HIRE 1,500 IN NEW OFFICE IN BUFFALO
- Strategic Financial Solutions, which bills itself as a debt consolidation company, is opening an office in Buffalo, N.Y., and plans to hire as many as 1,500 employees once the office is up and running. The company pointed toward a younger workforce and a low-cost readily available supply of labor as the reasons why it chose Buffalo to expand its operation from its current base in New York City.
