SUBPRIME LENDER SUFFERS AFTER SWITCH AWAY FROM DOOR-TO-DOOR COLLECTIONS
- For all of the talk about how automation and artificial intelligence are going to change the business world, perhaps the collections industry is still better off being behind the times. Provident Financial, a subprime lender in Great Britain, replaced 4,500 freelance door-to-door salesmen/debt collectors with 2,500 full-time staffers whose appointments with borrowers would be scheduled by analytical software. During that transition, the freelancers stopped caring and started leaving and now the company’s stock price has plummeted 20% in the past week.
NAVIENT FIGHTING STATE LICENSING MEASURES
- Student loan servicer Navient is spending big bucks at the state level, trying to keep legislatures from enacting licensing requirements, according to a published report. The company has spent $44,000 since January in Maine, Washington, and New York, which are all considering measures that would require student loan servicers to be licensed.
