JAIL TIME FOR GROUP OF NORTH CAROLINA COLLECTION SCAMMERS
- Five individuals who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud in a $6 million debt collection scam have been sentenced to prison. The ringleader of the scam, Cedric Clark, was sentenced to 42 months in prison while each of the other perpetrators received shorter sentences. The group bullied individuals into making payments by posing as law enforcement officials.
PENNSYLVANIA TAPS FORMER CFPB EMPLOYEE TO LEAD NEW BUREAU OF CONSUMER PROTECTION
- The state of Pennsylvania has tapped Nicholas Smyth to lead its newly created Bureau of Consumer Protection, which is being labeled as a state version of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Smyth was one of the first employees hired with the CFPB was created in 2010 and spent nearly five years there before leaving to join a private law firm in 2015.
HOUSE COULD VOTE TODAY ON OVERTURNING ARBITRATION RULE; WHITE HOUSE SAYS PRESIDENT WILL SIGN RESOLUTION IF PASSED
- The House of Representatives could vote as early as today on a resolution that would nullify the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s new arbitration rule, a move that the White House has thrown its support behind. Using the Congressional Review Act, Congress can overturn laws promulgated by federal agencies.
