EDUCATION DEPT. CANCELS ENFORCEMENT AGREEMENT WITH CFPB
- The Department of Education has canceled an agreement to have the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau investigate and enforce allegations of student loan fraud. The department accused the CFPB of not following the terms of the agreement when it did not direct complaints it received to Education Department within 10 days. The Education Department accused the CFPB of expanding its jurisdiction “into areas that Congress never intended.”
TCPA DEFENSE GOING TO GET MORE EXPENSIVE
- Defending allegations of Telephone Consumer Protection Act violations is going to take more time and be more expensive, thanks to a recent federal court ruling. Federal courts are being more and more “unsympathetic” to Spoke defenses in TCPA cases, said the managing partner of a New York law firm that specializes in telecommunications cases.
NUMBER OF UNCOMPENSATED CARE CASES RISING AT HOSPITALS
- The amount of uncompensated care at hospitals is rising at a faster rate in 2017 than it did a year ago, according to a published report. As hospitals are reporting their quarterly earnings, they are mentioning that the amount of charity care and bad debt is higher than expected. In some cases, the amount is 5% higher than it was a year ago.
