LAWSUIT ACCUSES COLLECTIONS COMPANY, STATE SHERIFFS OF JAILING PEOPLE WHO CAN’T AFFORD TO PAY FINES
- A lawsuit has been filed in Oklahoma that accuses a private collections company and all of the 77 county sheriff’s in the state of putting people who can’t afford to pay fines in jail, alleging that those individuals ate being extorted. Courts are not holding required hearings to ensure that individuals can afford to pay their fines and the collections company is marking up fines by 30%.
ENCORE CAPTIAL REPORTS THIRD QUARTER EARNINGS
- Encore Capital earned $28 million in the third quarter of 2017, compared with a loss of $1.5 million in the same period a year ago, the company reported yesterday. The company announced that it spent $292 million globally in buying defaulted debt, compared with $206 million in the same quarter of 2016. More than $110 million of the $292 million invested was spent on U.S. debts.
