- A plaintiff’s attorney who frequently files lawsuits against collection agencies has been called out for filing lawsuits in jurisdictions where the plaintiffs do not reside. Scott Wortman from Warshaw Burstein identified at least 16 lawsuits where Maxim Maximov certified his plaintiffs lived in Kings County, N.Y. when none of them did.
FCC VOTES TO GIVE CARRIERS POWER TO BLOCK CERTAIN ROBOCALLS
- The Federal Communications Commission yesterday voted to approve new rules that will allow phone carriers to block calls that come from phone numbers that can not or do not make outgoing calls, among other types of calls that will now be blocked. Along with calls coming from spoofed phone numbers, carriers are now allowed to block calls from area codes that do not exist or from numbers that have not been assigned to a provider.
U.K. COLLECTOR CANCELS PLANS TO GO PUBLIC
- Cabot Credit Management, the largest collection agency in the United Kingdom, has canceled its plans for an initial public offering of its stock, saying the timing wasn’t right. The company was looking to raise 1 billion pounds as part of the offering.

- Mick Mulvaney, the director of the Office of Management and Budget who once called the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau a “joke,” is being considered as a replacement for Richard Cordray until a permanent successor can be named.
PLAINTIFF FILES LAWSUITS ALLEGING FDCPA, TCPA VIOLATIONS
- A plaintiff has filed a pair of class-action lawsuits against two collection agencies and Bank of America, alleging that one of the agencies and BofA violated the Telephone Consumer Protection Act and the other agency violated the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
