PLAINTIFF CALLED OUT FOR ‘RUSE’ IN TCPA CASE, ORDERED TO SHOW CAUSE
- A plaintiff in a class-action lawsuit alleging violations of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act has been called out by a federal judge and ordered to prove why his case is not meritless. The plaintiff, Ken Johansen, admitted that he “posed” as an interested customer when contacted by National Gas & Electric and gave them a fake address and account number on purpose because he had no intention of signing up for the company’s service.
PLAINTIFFS FILE CLASS-ACTION LAWSUITS AGAINST CREDIT BUREAUS FOR FAILING TO UPDATE VACATED JUDGMENTS ON CREDIT REPORTS
- A plaintiff has filed class-action lawsuits against the three major credit bureaus – Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion, alleging that they violated the Fair Credit Reporting Act and New York Fair Credit Reporting Act by listing judgments on credit reports that had been vacated. The bureaus are accused of purchasing judgment information from third-party vendors and then not being willing to spend additional money to receive updates in those cases.
ALLTRAN EDUCATION CUTTING 129 JOBS IN ILLINOIS
- Alltran Education, a collection agency that specializes in collecting student loans, has filed a notice under the Illinois Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) that it is cutting 129 jobs at its Woodridge, Illinois office. The Woodridge location is one of six Alltran offices nationwide.
SCOTT TUCKER GETS 17 YEARS IN PRISON FOR RUNNING PAYDAY LOAN SCAM
- Scott Tucker, a payday lending mogul who made hundreds of millions of dollars running a payday loan operation that exploited individuals by charging high interest rates, has been sentenced to 16 years and eight months in prison. Tucker’s lawyer and co-defendant, Timothy Muir, was sentenced to seven years in prison.
