Jacob Corlyon looks at himself and his business as problem solvers. Having been hit by love at first sight when he started working in the ARM industry, Corlyon has flourished and now owns his own agency, Capital Collection Management. Even though he hasn’t been in the industry as long as some, he’s got some great advice about what it takes to be a success. How did you get your start in the industry?
I got started in this industry while I was still attending college. I started as a collector for a creditor and immediately loved the industry.
What is your career highlight so far?
Taking my passion for debt collection to the next level by starting my firm in 2013.
When or how are you most productive?
My most productive time is early morning, between the hours of 5:30am and 9:30am.
Which industry professional do you admire most?
I serve on the NYSCA Board of Directors and I would have to say that I admire each one of my fellow directors.
What is one thing you do better than everyone else?
Think outside of the box to come up with unique solutions to problems.
What do you like most about this industry?
The backbone of this industry is its people and that is what I like most about it. If you have attended either an ACA or state specific industry expo you know what I am talking about. This is one of the only industries where the top executives no matter the size of the company will talk openly about their business and help others in the industry be successful.
What is one thing you wish you could change about this industry?
Its image and the negative connotations that come up when you mention debt collection. Our industry has been stained by some bad actors along the way and I would like to see more emphasis on all the good our industry does.
If you weren’t in this industry, what would you be doing?
That is a hard question to answer. If I wasn’t in the debt collection industry I would create another business venture that would solve a problem for either consumers or businesses.
Describe a typical work day.
I start my day with a 4:30am workout to get the blood flowing, then I have breakfast with my wife and head into the office. Once I get to the office, I am working on any special projects or tasks that are a priority to me before the rest of my staff arrives. Then my day is full of meetings, calls and emails. I will leave the office somewhere between 5:30 and 7:00pm.
