Gov. Paul LePage of Maine has signed a bill that amends that state’s Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, as it pertains to how debt collectors are licensed.
The news was first reported yesterday by Buckley Sandler.
The new law will take effect 90 days after the state legislative session has adjourned. The legislature is due to adjourn in mid-April, which means the law will likely take effect in mid-July.
Among the changes to the state’s FDCPA are:
- To remove “face to face” from the licensing condition when soliciting creditors from the state
- To require that a collection agency be licensed in Maine if it is collecting on debts from individuals living in Maine, regardless of where the collection agency is located
