In part because of her decisions and handling of student loan companies and collection-related topics, Betsy DeVos is the “worst Secretary of Education this country has ever seen,” according to a pair of Massachusetts Democrats, who issued a report last week on her alleged misdeeds.
The authors, Sen. Elizabeth Warren [D-Mass.] and Rep. Katherine Clark [D-Mass.], not only said the DeVos was the worst, but that she was the worst “by a large margin.”
“DeVos has spent her first year bending over backwards to allow students to be cheated, taking an axe to public education, and undermining the civil rights of students across the country,” Sen. Warren said in a statement. “Secretary DeVos has failed in her job and she must be held accountable.”
DeVos had holdings in 102 different financial services companies, including a student loan debt collector, prior to being nominated for the cabinet post.
The report also questions a decision last year to revoke a policy that prohibited loan guaranty agencies from charging a collection fee on defaulted borrowers who enter a repayment agreement.
The Department of Education has also scaled back relief to individuals who attended Corinthian Colleges and were defrauded when taking out student loans which they could not afford to repay.
The final straw, according to the report, was the termination of the partnership between the Department of Education and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau regarding oversight and enforcement related to student loans.
