- A federal judge in Illinois has dismissed a class-action lawsuit and compelled arbitration in a Fair Debt Collection Practices Act case even though there was no bill of sale to prove the debt was sold.

- Just like Al Capone, a debt collector already on the industry’s naughty list has been tripped up by not filing his income taxes. Dorian Wills allegedly owes more than $1.2 million in unpaid income tax for money he earned while operating a string of collection agencies that allegedly engaged in illegal activities in trying to collect debts.
COLLECTORS FACING 20 YEARS IN PRISON AFTER LIVING IT UP ON $2 MILLION IN STOLEN PAYMENTS
- A pair of Texas debt collectors are each facing up to 20 years in prison when they are sentenced later this year, after both pleaded guilty to collecting $2 million worth of unpaid debts on behalf of contractors and then not remitting the payments. The two have each pleaded guilty to one one count of mail fraud.
TWENTY AGS PEN LETTER TO CONGRESS URGING REJECTION OF BILL THAT WOULD EXEMPT LAWYERS FROM FDCPA
- A group of 20 state attorneys general have sent a letter urging Congress not to move forward with a bill that would exempt lawyers from complying with the FDCPA when engaged in litigation-related activities. The letter comes on the heels of a report that says the full House is set to consider the bill, which was passed by the House Financial Services Committee last month.
FTC EXPECTED TO NAME ANDREW SMITH AS NEXT HEAD OF CONSUMER PROTECTION UNIT
- Andrew Smith, currently a partner at the law firm of Covington & Burling, is expected to be named the next head of the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, according to a published report. Smith would replace Thomas Pahl, who recently took a job at the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection working under acting director Mick Mulvaney.
