If you’re going to steal, you may as well go all the way.
A woman in Virginia who has pleaded guilty to stealing $300,000 from the women’s clinic at which she worked went as far as to set up her own collection agency and referred some of the unpaid bills accrued by the clinic’s patients to the agency, but then did not remit any of the payments back to the clinic.
The woman, Evelyn Gregory, is facing up to 20 years in prison when she is sentenced in September. She worked at the clinic for nine years.
Not content with just using corporate credit cards to steal $250,000 for airline and concert tickets, vehicle repairs, and car rentals, she and her son took the extra step of starting their own collection agency. As the office manager, Gregory placed accounts from the clinic with the agency, and collected $50,000. None of that money was remitted back to the clinic, according to a published report. The name of the agency was also not mentioned. Once the payments were made by the clinic’s patients, Gregory would remove the debts from the clinic’s books to make it appear as though the debts never existed.
