A man who pleaded guilty to inciting a bomb scare at a collection agency in Oregon last year was shot and killed by police yesterday in an unrelated incident.
Jesse Wade Powell, 44, was shot and killed by a Sheriff’s deputy who responded to reports of a dispute between a man and a woman, which included gunfire, at a campsite. A stolen U-Haul truck was found at the campsite.
Powell was arrested last year after surveillance cameras caught him placing what looked to be a bomb near the smoking area of a collection agency. Initially thought to be dynamite attached to a cellphone, the device turned out to be two road flares taped to a digital recorder, which was made to look like an explosive device. Why the device was placed at a collection agency was never released. Initial reports indicated that it was likely the collection agency was not a target. The device had been hidden at the collection agency for three days before it was discovered.
Powell was charged with first degree disorderly conduct and unlawful possession of a hoax device. He pleaded guilty to the hoax device charge and was sentenced to 45 days in jail and three years of probation. Powell had numerous convictions stemming back more than three decades.
