SUPREME COURT TO HEAR ARGUMENTS IN FDCPA CASE OVER STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS

  • The Supreme Court yesterday agreed to hear arguments in Rotkiske v. Klemm, a case which focuses on when the one-year statute of limitations starts in which to claim a debt collector violated the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

BILL INTRODUCED TO MAKE CCPA EVEN MORE CONSUMER FRIENDLY

  • Working with California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, a state Senator has introduced additional legislation that would strengthen the consumer protection provisions of the California Consumer Privacy Act.

KENTUCKY COLLECTION LAW FIRM FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY PROTECTION

  • Fenton Law, and its back-office collections operation, M&P Collections, have filed for bankruptcy protection and are planning to sell their remaining assets next month, according to court filings.

ARIZONA STATE EMPLOYEE PLEADS GUILTY TO TAKING BRIBES FROM EMPLOYEE OF DEFUNCT COLLECTION AGENCY

  • A former employee of the Arizona Department of Economic Security has pleaded guilty in Los Angeles to accepting bribes and providing confidential information that helped a collection agency recover almost $1 million in unpaid debts.

REP. WATERS URGES CFPB EMPLOYEES TO BECOME WHISTLEBLOWERS

  • In an open letter to employees at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Rep. Maxine Waters [D-Calif.], the chairwoman of the House Financial Services Committee, is urging anyone who has witnessed “waste, fraud, abuse or gross mismanagement” at the agency to come forward and alert her or her staff.

SEN. GRASSLEY ASKS IRS FOR DETAILS ABOUT NON-PROFIT HOSPITALS’ COLLECTION PRACTICES

  • Sen. Chuck Grassley [R-Iowa] has written a letter to the commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service seeking, among other things, information about the debt collection practices at non-profit hospitals nationwide.
