Today is the worst day of the year to try and call someone using a phone number that the call recipient does not recognize, according to a published report. That’s because today is the Tax Day and robocallers will be out en masse trying to trick individuals into falling for some sort of scam.
Last year, nearly 143 million “nuisance” and “high-risk” calls were placed on Tax Day, and initial reports estimate that number will be significantly higher this year. Nearly 43% of all Americans were targeted with at least one of these types of calls last year. About 10% of all robocalls are placed during the month of April, according to the report.
Generally speaking, Tuesday is the day where most nuisance and high-risk robocalls are made, according to the report. The fewest number of robocalls are placed on Sunday.
The company that provided the analysis also recently released data that indicates only 10% of all robocalls are flowing through numbers owned by one of the six major wireless carriers — AT&T, CenturyLink, Comcast, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless — even though the six carriers account for more than 75% of all call volume.
While nuisance robocalls increased 13% in 2018, compared with 2017, fraud robocalls actually decreased by 18% in 2018.
