Kathy Kraninger, the Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, announced a number of promotions and appointments yesterday, including removing the “acting” descriptor from the job titles of the Bureau’s deputy director and chief operating officer.
Brian Johnson has been named the CFPB’s Deputy Director. He has been the Acting Deputy Director for the past nine months. Johnson joined the CFPB in December 2017, shortly after Mick Mulvaney was named Acting Director, and has progressed rapidly during his short tenure at the agency. Johnson started as a Senior Advisor to the Director, was promoted to Principal Policy Director five months later, and named Acting Deputy Director three months after that.
Before joining the CFPB, Johnson spent five years working in various positions for the House Financial Services Committee under former Chairman Jeb Hensarling.
Kraninger also announced that Kate Fulton will officially become the CFPB’s Chief Operating Officer. Fulton has worked at the CFPB since 2013 and has been the agency’s Acting COO for the past year. Since 2016, Fulton has been the Deputy Chief of Staff and Senior Counsel.
Melissa Brand has been named Director of the CFPB’s Office of Civil Rights. Brand has worked at he CFPB since 2016 and was previously the Equal Employment Opportunity Complaints Program Manager. Brand has also worked at the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Joining the Bureau are Yasaman Sutton and Jim Rice. Sutton will be a Senior Advisor and Counselor to the Director. She had previously worked at the Office of Management and Budget, which is where Kraninger worked before being named the CFPB’s Director last year. Rice will serve as Assistant Director of the Office of Servicemember Affairs. He has spent the past 30 years serving in the U.S. Army, most recently as Chief of the Health Services Division for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
