JUDGE LOWERS ATTORNEY FEE AWARD IN FDCPA CASE BY 27%

  • A District Court judge in Connecticut has reduced the amount to be awarded in attorney’s fees by 27% to a plaintiff who won a Fair Debt Collection Practices Act lawsuit against a collection law firm that listed two different amounts owed in a collection letter that was found to be materially misleading.

LOTS OF QUESTIONS, HARDSHIP TALES, BUT FEW ANSWERS ABOUT GROWING NUMBER OF UNPAID MEDICAL DEBTS

  • The spotlight on how healthcare facilities collect on unpaid medical debts continues to intensify, with a new report from The New York Times questioning why more lawsuits are being filed against individuals who do not pay their bills and how lawmakers are now looking into solutions that would provide consumers with additional protections.

MANY PEOPLE USING CREDIT CARDS TO PAY OFF MEDICAL BILLS: SURVEY

  • One-third of individuals who have credit card debt are in that position because they used their credit card to pay for a medical bill, according to the results of a national survey that was released last week. About 10% of that group that have used a credit card to pay for a medical bill owe at least $10,000, according to the survey, which was conducted by CompareCards.com.

FCC GOOD AT ASSESSING ROBOCALL FINES, NOT SO GOOD AT COLLECTING THEM: REPORT

  • The Federal Communications Commission has assessed more than $208 million in fines against companies accused of making illegal robocalls since 2015, but have only collected $6,790 of that amount, according to a published report. Maybe it should outsource the collection to a third-party agency? 🙂

WORTH NOTING: A silver-backed chevrotain has been photographed in the wild for the first time ever … I would have spent $1,995 to show my love for Alex Trebek, too … After 75 years, a missing U.S. submarine has been found near Japan … People are skipping their winter vacation this year because they can’t afford it … It takes a movie to sell a house in California, these days … What’s available on Disney+, which launches today … For anyone who is wondering what to get me for Christmas this year … The firing of Don Cherry was a long time coming … A message in a bottle was found nine years after it was tossed into the ocean.
