It seems somehow fitting that Aylix Jensen ended up working in the collection industry, considering that had she not, she would have considered working with a group that focused on helping individuals who had been wrongly convicted. Coincidences aside, Aylix is quickly making a name for herself. Read on to learn more about her and how someone who grew up in South Africa ended up in Minnesota.

What is your career highlight so far?
Prevailing on a motion to dismiss in Federal Court in the Middle District of Florida based on an unsettled area of the law.
When or how are you most productive?
I’m most productive when I am busiest. I am comfortable working under pressure.
Which industry professional do you admire most?
The industry professional I admire most is John Rossman. John is the chair of the Financial Services department at Moss and Barnett and is incredibly intelligent, creative, hard-working and a great role model. John, and the other members of the department, have supported and encouraged me in this dynamic and complex area of the law.
What is one thing you do better than everyone else?
I think that in a cohesive department like ours, we all have the benefit of the special strengths and skills of others.
What do you like most about this industry?
The people and the challenges that make every day interesting and rewarding. As a newer lawyer in the industry, I have been encouraged by the amount of people willing to share their knowledge and expertise.
What is one thing you wish you could change about this industry?
The one thing I wish I could change about the industry is to remove the stigma associated with collection agencies, including the misconception that collection agencies are non-compliant and unethical. For the most part, collection agencies operate within strict industry-standard guidelines and act with the highest degree of integrity and fairness. It is important for the public to understand the significant role that collection agencies play in the success of our economy.
If you weren’t in this industry, what would you be doing?
If I was not in this industry, I would have considered working with the Innocence Project. Since the beginning of my undergraduate studies, I have been fascinated by the prevalence of wrongful convictions resulting from, among other things, eyewitness misidentification. I am particularly interested in the intersection of the criminal justice system with implicit bias.
Describe a typical work day.
My typical work day consists of reading, researching legal issues, writing briefs, communicating with clients, negotiating settlements and responding to compliance questions.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Watching mindless television shows on Bravo.
