D.C. SUPERIOR COURT SUSPENDS DEBT COLLECTION HEARINGS
Among other types of hearings that have been postponed, the D.C. Superior Court is suspending all debt collection hearings to limit public interactions and continue social distancing protocols to contain the spread of coronavirus.
The court will announce new dates for hearings related to landlords and tenants, small claims, debt collection, mortgage foreclosure, tax foreclosure, and housing court.
While the court will remain open for emergency matters, and other divisions are operating normally, the Superior Court has decided to try and take steps to limit how many people need to be in Court for the foreseeable future.
FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WAIVES INTEREST ON STUDENT LOANS
President Trump has announced that students with federally guaranteed student loans do not have to pay interest on those loans for the foreseeable future. Students need only make principal payments.
Consumer advocates said the administration did not go far enough and should suspend all student loan payments until the coronavirus crisis is over.
“As people become sick, and as the effects of the virus ripple through the economy, the coronavirus is going to make it harder for many student loan borrowers to pay their student loans,” said the National Consumer Law Center, according to a published report.
