SENATE, WHITE HOUSE REACH DEAL ON STIMULUS PACKAGE, BUT QUESTIONS ABOUT DEBT COLLECTION REMAIN

  • The Senate and White House early today announced they had reached a deal on a $2 trillion stimulus package to help keep the nation afloat during the coronavirus pandemic, but the particulars of the bill were still being worked out as of early Wednesday morning and the big question — what is proposes about debt collections — was still unknown.

STATE, LOCAL UPDATE ON CORONAVIRUS RESPONSE: MARCH 25

  • The news is moving faster than most of us can keep up. Which states have issued shelter-in-place orders? Which states have placed prohibitions on debt collection? What is the federal government doing? There are so many more questions than answers. Read on for updates on where things stand, as of Wednesday morning.

ED. DEPT. STOPS COLLECTING ON DEFAULTED LOANS, TELLS AGENCIES TO DO SAME

  • The Department of Education announced yesterday that it has stopped collecting on defaulted student loans and has ordered private collection agencies working on its behalf to halt collection activities “until further notice,” according to a published report, which cites a memo that was sent to collection agencies.

$2.3M SETTLEMENT REACHED IN CASE OVER MASS. COLLECTION CALL LAW

  • A District Court judge in Massachusetts has granted a settlement in a class-action case after a plaintiff accused a defendant of making more than two debt collection calls in a seven-day period, in violation of Massachusetts state law.

WORTH NOTING: Cooking tips through coronavirus … Prince Charles has tested positive for coronavirus … Golf courses are still open across the country for people who need something to do … The dos and don’ts of online video meetings … What does it say about the Waffle House index when it closes 365 of its restaurants? … Astronauts share their secrets about surviving in isolation … What to do if you’re worried about paying your bills … All questions that have been asked in my household during the past week … Things are looking pretty grim in New York right now.
