If anyone needed further proof that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is planning on ramping up its enforcement activities, one need not look any further than the post the Acting Director Dave Uejio posted yesterday, making an open call for any attorneys who might be interested in working in the public sector.
The recruiting effort is looking for attorneys “at all experience levels” to come work for the CFPB in its Office of Enforcement, Office of Supervision Policy, Office of Regulations, Office of Fair Lending & Equal Opportunity, and its Legal Division.
Many have expected the CFPB to ramp up its enforcement efforts under the Biden Administration. President Biden has tapped Rohit Chopra, pending confirmation in the Senate, to be the next director of the Bureau, replacing Kathleen Kraninger, who was asked to resign last month. Chopra’s CFPB is expected to be more aggressive in its enforcement mandate than Kraninger was, with people expecting his agenda to be more in line with that of former director Richard Cordray.
Until Chopra is confirmed by the Senate, Uejio is in charge of the CFPB and he has already made it known he will not sit back and do nothing but keep the director’s chair warm until Chopra shows up. Uejio has made comments about the CFPB’s debt collection rule and other priorities that the CFPB will have while he is in charge. That includes hiring a lot of lawyers.
“We must hold accountable companies that break the law and harm American consumers and small businesses during this time of incredible financial stress,” Uejio said in a blog posted published to the CFPB’s website yesterday. “To do this, we need the fullest talents and passion of the American public. The Bureau has one of the most remarkable workforces I have ever seen, and I invite you to seize the moment and join us.”
