California’s Department of Financial Protection & Innovation is seeking candidates to serve on its Debt Collection Advisory Committee.
Seven members were selected back in 2021 to server two-year terms and those terms are about to expire. The DFPI is looking for individuals who can serve a two-year term from 2023 to 2025.
At least of one the seven members must be from a group or organization that represents consumers. This is a volunteer position — nobody gets paid to participate.
Interested candidates should either provide a statement detailing their qualifications or fill out this form. If a candidate opts not to submit the form and wants to provide a statement of his/her own, the statement should include:
- Name, Title, Address, Phone and Email.
- Background and areas/years of expertise.
- Experience with state or national trade associations or policy discussions regarding debt collection issues.
- Any certifications, or membership in state or national trade associations, held by the applicant or the applicant’s business.

- Tamar Yudenfreund, Midland Credit Management

- Prasad Krishnamurthy, UC Berkeley School of Law
Among the current priorities of the committee are helping the DFPI build and launch a licensing program for collectors in California.
When the DFPI launched the Debt Collection Advisory Committee back in 2021, it included the following requirements:
- Location within California; geographic representation preferred.
- Small and large agencies.
- Owner, corporate officer or senior-level employees of debt collector licensees or applicants.
- Representation of different industry segments required to be licensed, including:
- Third-party collection agencies
- Debt buying companies (preference for Receivables Management Certification Program)
- Collection law firms
- Leadership in the industry through participation in state and national trade associations.
- Direct experience working with clients, consumers, auditors and licensing.
- Experience with types of debt collection, including financial, educational, medical, retail, municipal, others.
- Diversity of backgrounds and experiences.
