The proposal would cancel up to $20,000 in interest charges. Individual borrowers making less than $120,000 per year would also be eligible for forgiveness of the entire balance beyond the original principal amount that was borrowed.
The proposed rules are expected to be released in the coming weeks and would hopefully go into effect before the presidential election in November, the White House hopes. Talks have been ongoing for several months about the plan, according to published reports. The objective is to help individuals who are suffering from financial hardship and whose balances have increased because of accumulated interest.
Republicans successfully blocked President Biden’s first attempt at student loan cancellation, a plan that called for borrowers making under $125,000 per year to have up to $20,000 of their student loan balance erased. The Supreme Court struck down the plan, saying the government exceeded its authority. Critics said the plan was unfair to individuals who did not go to college or who had already paid off their loans.
President Biden is expected to announce the proposal during a campaign stop in Wisconsin today, while Vice President Harris will be attending a student loan event in Philadelphia.
