How did you get your start in the industry?
I started out in corporate law/capital markets/structured finance & derivatives in NYC for just a few years. I moved to Minneapolis and continued with corporate law and commercial law both at a law firm and in-house corporate legal teams in a variety of industries. I wanted to lead a company’s legal function and was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to lead and apply my broad background at Absolute Resolutions.
What is your career highlight so far?
Anytime I start at a new company or move into a different role, I get the opportunity to learn and apply what I’ve experienced and learned so far. I’m a lifelong learner so every opportunity to move along a steep learning curve over the past 20 years as a lawyer is a huge highlight for me.
When or how are you most productive?
During the quiet of early morning. When I have a lot to get done, I’ll come into the office early.
Which industry professional do you admire most?
Not just in this industry but in many other industries, I admire compliance professionals. I see compliance and legal as being hand-in-hand to help protect the company from whatever storm comes.
What is one thing you do better than everyone else?
According to my children, I am steadfast in my ability to follow through with consequences 😊
What do you like most about this industry?
I love the complexity and where it fits in the broader macroeconomy. It is an essential part of the credit cycle.
What is one thing you wish you could change about this industry?
The reputation it has in the outside world. I work with smart, dedicated and hard-working professionals at Absolute Resolutions who are committed to doing the right thing and always complying with the law. That isn’t talked about enough outside the industry.
Describe a typical work day.
As you can imagine, there isn’t a typical work day. A recent day involved reviewing policies and procedures, training internal teams on a variety of legal topics, reviewing contracts, meeting with my team to continue our development of internal processes, and meeting with internal stakeholders to coordinate processes so we can position the company to scale the right way.
What is your guilty pleasure?
I love reading Sci Fi books and watching Sci Fi shows.
What is the best advice you have ever received?
When I moved from a law firm to being an in-house legal counsel, a former classmate told me that … “You already know how to be a good lawyer, now you need to concentrate on learning the business”. It was great advice and something I think about every day.
What are you currently reading?
“The Three-Body Problem” and “Financial Intelligence.”
What is one fact you’d like everyone in the industry to know about you?
I have a Series 3 license and could (technically but not realistically) trade commodity futures and options.
