Angela Becker is a lifer in the ARM industry. Having worked only at credit and collection companies since graduating college, she has developed a serious amount of experience and has seen just about everything there is to see. You have to love someone who lives by the motto she does. Read on to learn more about Angela, why overthinking is her super power, and how she gets a second wind to help her problem solving.

Name: Angela Becker
Job Title: Directory, Compliance & Audit
Company: Denali Capital, LLC
Length of time at current company: 8 months
Length of time in industry: 18 years

How did you get your start in the industry?
Few months out of college I applied to a job posting not knowing what I was getting myself into as a Client Service Representative at Jefferson Capital Systems, LLC. This position was on the debt purchasing side of the business to service post purchase sale activity. This position and other positions that I held at Jefferson Capital Systems, LLC granted me the opportunity to learn first-hand from several industry experts the inner workings of the industry, and since then I’ve remained in the industry with the goal to learn as many aspects as possible of the business.

What is your career highlight so far?
Being afforded the opportunity to hold a number of roles throughout my career with a variety of companies, I get to learn new processes, systems, and have the ability to share my experience and expertise with others.

When or how are you most productive?
I am most productive in the mornings and then after hours when I’m muddling through how to attack a particular obstacle that I may be facing. My second wind of problem-solving comes after 5pm when I’m able to take a few steps away from my work.

Which industry professional do you admire most?
Andy Carlson. He always brings a unique perspective to situations, and it has taught me that it’s always worth to approach obstacles in an unconventional manner which can turn an obstacle into an opportunity.

What is one thing you do better than everyone else?
Hard to say, because I feel a lot of folks do things better, but my first thought is to overthink something. I tend to think through all the risk associated, then weigh the pros of the situation before coming to a decision.

What do you like most about this industry?
Variety. From the personalities in the industry to the nonstop changes that the industry is facing makes it challenging.

What is one thing you wish you could change about this industry?
Over-regulation in the industry has a negative impact on consumers, and the approach should be to improve communication and not cause confusion with consumers.

If you weren’t in this industry, what would you be doing?
Client relations/process improvements in a different industry.

Describe a typical work day.
Coffee, get the kids off to school, workout (if time permits), and then start with the daily task of going through unanswered emails, and following up on outstanding emails. This usually leads into audit reviews, policy and procedure reviews/updates, handling escalated situations, and staying caught up on industry updates/changes.

What is your guilty pleasure?
Reality TV

What is the best advice you have ever received?
Work hard and play hard.

What are you currently reading?
“Shut up and Listen!” By Tilman Fertitta

What is one fact you’d like everyone in the industry to know about you?
Always supporting and growing talent around me. I’m always willing to be available to those who may need to bounce an idea off of or provide alternative perspectives to situations.

Who else would you like to see answer these questions?
Amy Dowdey, Denali Capital, LLC
