Google Tests AI-Powered Feature to Call Businesses on Your Behalf

Google is testing a new AI-driven feature designed to streamline how consumers interact with local businesses. The “Ask for Me” tool, currently in the experimental phase, allows users to request services from businesses without having to make a direct phone call. Instead, the AI performs the task for you, gathering details about pricing and availability, and summarizing the findings.

New experiment just launched on Search Labs – you can use AI to call businesses on your behalf to find out what they charge for a service & when it’s available, like an oil change ASAP from nearby mechanics. https://t.co/9rKiRXiXZV— Rose Yao (@dozenrose) January 30, 2025

How it works: When users search for services such as “oil change” or “nail salons nearby,” those enrolled in Google’s Search Labs can select the “Ask for Me” option. This prompts a form where users input specifics about the service they need — like “tire replacement” or “nail art” — along with details like timing preferences. The AI then makes the call to local businesses, gathers the necessary information, and sends users a summary of pricing and availability.

  • The feature utilizes Google’s Duplex technology, which has been used previously for tasks like restaurant reservations and ensuring business details remain up-to-date on Google Maps. The new tool is designed to save time, eliminating the need for users to sit on hold or speak directly to a representative.

Current testing: At present, “Ask for Me” is limited to certain services, primarily focused on auto maintenance (like oil changes) and beauty services (such as manicures). As part of the experiment, users may be placed on a waitlist if they try to access the feature, as its availability is still being tested.

What’s next: While the feature is in its early stages, there is potential for “Ask for Me” to expand to a wider variety of services if successful. This shift represents a growing trend in AI’s role in consumer engagement, where technology not only simplifies tasks but also redefines how businesses and consumers communicate.

For now, the tool is limited to those enrolled in the experimental Google Labs program. If the feature proves popular, it could pave the way for broader adoption, transforming how businesses manage customer inquiries and further integrating AI into consumer service processes.
