Charity Hop thought she could live without working in the collection industry, but she missed it so much. We are glad she decided to come back and stay, even though she daydreams about one day owning her own restaurant with her husband. One thing they will likely argue about is the color scheme — he’ll want Honolulu blue and silver (Go Lions!) while she’ll try to get green and gold. Read on to learn more about Charity, why her best advice is easier said then done, and why she loves working in compliance.

Name: Charity Hop
Job Title: Risk Analyst & Escalation Specialist
Company: Meduit
Length of time at current company: 13 years
Length of time in industry: 13 years

How did you get your start in the industry?
I began my career in collections with a small family-owned collection agency in the legal department. Prior to taking the position, most of my work history was in fast food management and manufacturing. I quickly found that this industry was extremely intricate and dove into learning everything I could. I grew within the company, and from there our company grew and became a part of the larger organization that I have the privilege of working for today.

What is your career highlight so far?
After more than 11 years of operational experience within the industry I stepped away for six months in 2022, but quickly found that I missed the business. This led me to returning and joining the Meduit Compliance Department. Seeing the industry from a different perspective and being able to apply my past operational experience has been very rewarding and I am grateful for the opportunity.

When or how are you most productive?
I am most productive when I set daily tasks and deadlines for myself. Keeping track of your time and how it is spent is such an important part of being in a department like Compliance because we can be pulled in many different directions easily.

Which industry professional do you admire most?
This is a tough question. In the last few years within my new role my world has been expanded to include so many individuals across our company and the industry. I am not sure that I can name one specific person, but I am so appreciative of everyone that I have met along the way.

What is one thing you do better than everyone else?
I can’t say that I do one thing better than everyone else. I honestly think that we all become better at what we do by being transparent and always being open to the fact that everyone has something to contribute to the greater good.

What do you like most about this industry?
Through my years of experience, I have most valued the ability to assist consumers when they are faced with unexpected collections.

What is one thing you wish you could change about this industry?
I wish I could change the stigma that this industry has.

If you weren’t in this industry, what would you be doing?
I do miss the restaurant industry from time to time. My husband and I often daydream about owning our own restaurant. Maybe one day we will make that dream a reality.

Describe a typical work day.
My daily work includes corrective and preventative action investigations, legislation tracking and reviews, and handling escalated complaints. I have the privilege of working alongside various internal teams to dive into the issues we are faced with and working to find solutions.

What is your guilty pleasure?
We are huge football fans. If we are not rooting for our son’s college team, we are watching our favorite NFL teams. As a house divided, my husband is a Lions fan, and I am a Packers fan, so it always makes for an interesting few weeks each season.

What is the best advice you have ever received?
Don’t take anything personally. This is easier said than done, but it allows you to be open to anything that comes your way.

What are you currently reading?
I just finished “Confessions of the Dead” by James Patterson and J.D. Barker. I love a good thriller!

What is one fact you’d like everyone in the industry to know about you?
I love to learn new things! Even after being in the industry for as long as I have, there is always something new.

Who else would you like to see answer these questions?
