If you are looking for Brent Adair, the best place not to look is in his comfort zone. Having found his niche working in client services, Brent still craves working to be the best version of himself. Read on to learn more about Brent, the book he loves to read over and over again, and the rabbit hole he thinks we should all go down from time to time.
Name: Brent Adair
Job Title: Director of Client Success
Company: State Collection Service, Inc.
Length of time at current company: 12 years
Length of time in industry: 24 years
How did you get your start in the industry?
I started as a self-pay representative in 2001 and quickly took on roles as team lead and manager before transitioning to work for a worker’s compensation network. The short time spent in worker’s compensation made me appreciate, and miss, working in revenue cycle, so I went back to the company where I started and worked in Client Services. I fell in love with assisting clients with their needs and building strong relationships, so I’ve been in similar roles ever since.
What is your career highlight so far?
Meeting and forming strong relationships with countless client and industry partners that have helped grow my career and shape me into an effective leader.
When or how are you most productive?
I’m most productive first thing in the morning. I like to get an early start to the day with self-care, such as exercise or meditation. That gets me into the best frame of mind to tackle the workday.
Which industry professional do you admire most?
It’s difficult to narrow the list down to one person. I have been positively influenced by so many individuals along the way. Their collective guidance and mentorship have helped me grow in my professional life.
What is one thing you do better than everyone else?
I can’t say that I do anything better than anyone else, but seeing things from competing points of view has always helped me gain a better understanding of a situation or problem.
What do you like most about this industry?
It’s tough to say because I like so many things about the industry! It all comes down to helping people. When I first started, I felt fulfilled in helping patients with their questions and to resolve their open balances. I now find great satisfaction in helping client partners achieve their strategic goals. In all instances, it’s the people that make the difference.
What is one thing you wish you could change about this industry?
Perception or misinformation. We often hear from our peers, client partners, and especially consumers their stories of what they have heard of the industry. Go down a rabbit hole in the r/Debt subreddit when you have some free time, and you’ll see exactly what I mean.
If you weren’t in this industry, what would you be doing?
I’d definitely be in some sort of service-related role. I’m at my best when I’m helping build relationships, strategize on long-term objectives, and helping to troubleshoot problems.
Describe a typical work day.
In this industry, there’s never a typical work day, but mine always starts with coffee. Once properly caffeinated, I tackle any urgent messages or to-do list items. Mid-morning is about the time I receive and read Mike’s Daily Digest email (no charge for the shameless plug!), and then I make outreach to clients and partners who I haven’t spoken with in a while in between meetings.
What is your guilty pleasure?
I love a good crime show; “Law & Order”, “Chicago P.D.”, and the like.
What is the best advice you have ever received?
Never stop learning and growing! I try to push myself out of my comfort zone and embrace new experiences and I’m always learning how to adapt to change throughout life.
What are you currently reading?
I’m currently reading “The Energy Bus” by Jon Gordon. I often re-read this book to remind myself how to manage negativity and create positive energy. I always catch something new each time around. Being the start of a new year it’s the perfect time for a refresher!
What is one fact you’d like everyone in the industry to know about you?
I love helping people and I love solving problems. I like being able to bounce ideas off one another and being of service to others.
Who else would you like to see answer these questions?
Jake Richards.
