When we finally getting around to hosting an industry potluck, we can count on Cheryl Spanier to bring her famous lasagna. Not only because of how good it tastes, but because Cheryl is someone who is always willing to help, like how she got her start in the industry, her work with HFMA and her dream job of working with disadvantaged children. Read on to learn more about Cheryl, why she still considers herself a student to this day, and why the golden rule means so much to her.

How did you get your start in the industry?
I was in the banking industry prior to collections. My banking client owned a collection agency and invited me to come work with him to grow his business.
What is your career highlight so far?
Working with exceptional professionals within the healthcare space. Serving as Chapter President for HFMA and serving as the Regional Executive for HFMA Region 5.
When or how are you most productive?
When completing tasks, I am most productive in my quiet office. When speaking, helping others or meeting with clients or potential clients I am most productive in a group setting and on the road.
Which industry professional do you admire most?
I admire and appreciate our friends at ACA International who work tirelessly to keep us informed and fight for our industry.
What is one thing you do better than everyone else?
I am not sure I am better than anyone at any one thing, but I do make a superb lasagna! For work, I am extremely passionate about helping others and knowledgeable about our industry and try to be a resource in my network.
What do you like most about this industry?
The ability to identify an issue and provide a solution to benefit our clients and the communities they serve. People feel better when they satisfy their debt. Its an accomplishment.
What is one thing you wish you could change about this industry?
I wish the regulatory madness would stop and that thorough research is completed prior to politicians making uninformed decisions. We only want to help providers get paid for the exceptional work they do. There is enough charity and programs to assist those really in need. It just takes a little work to get it.
If you weren’t in this industry, what would you be doing?
I think my dream job would be in law enforcement or philanthropy – working with disadvantaged children
Describe a typical work day.
This differs from day to day. Sometimes I am in my office assisting clients or our operational teams. Other days I am traveling and speaking with hospitals/health systems across the country. Plenty of reading and staying current with industry changes.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Chocolate!
What is the best advice you have ever received?
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
What are you currently reading?
I read a lot but this week I am reading “Never Split the Difference” by Chris Voss.
What is one fact you’d like everyone in the industry to know about you?
I am a forever student. I love to learn new things and be a resource for others.
