There are people who hate the grind, and then there are people like Kristi Loyer who excel in it. Digging deep and finding that internal motivation to keep your head down, stay focused, and get stuff done. She uses her commute to and from work to set herself up, and makes the most of each day. How did you get your start in the industry?
I was just looking for a job at the time. I had no idea that it would turn out to be a career. I had bills that needed paid and food that needed on the table. The intention was not to stay; it was to make it through and find a career at some point.
What is your career highlight so far?
The highlight of my career so far is the opportunity to help team members reach potential that they did not every know they had. Being a helpful hand in helping someone reach their goals is amazing.
When or how are you most productive?
I am most productive when I am organized and intentional. I always set my top six priority list every day. What is important and what needs to be done now. The organization of my day is key for me as I know that if I don’t organize my day, my focus can be easily distracted or pulled away from priority items.
Which industry professional do you admire most?
I admire the folks that I witness falling in love with the grind. The people that pull energy from that same grind inspire me. Tapping into their internal drive is something to admire.
What is one thing you do better than everyone else?
This is a hard question because I really do believe that in any give case or scenario there is always room to grow and be better. I do find myself filing my cup with the way that I find to connect with people. I do think that might just be a superpower that I have. A superpower that has taken time to develop and I continue to make this very important in my day to day.
What do you like most about this industry?
The opportunity. If you can dream it, you can do it. It is not just being on the phones asking for money.
What is one thing you wish you could change about this industry?
The stigma that comes along with collections of any type. Slowly we are making that change and I love that.
If you weren’t in this industry, what would you be doing?
High school math teacher. I am weird and like math. Three daughters later and I might be on to something here. All three really did not like their math classes, we made it through and the dislike for math was much less with some math TLC. I have done some math tutoring that was a lot of fun!
Describe a typical work day.
My workday really starts on my drive in. I have a 45 min drive each way. On my drive I start to set my top 6 most important tasks for the day. Once in the office I write them down so I can do my best to stay focused. I try to jump on in when I arrive at the office and start checking down my list. I don’t hold myself to timeframe as I try to be as available for my team as much as I can and is needed to help them WIN for the day. Like my drive in I use my drive home to recap my day and mentally prep for the next.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Murder mystery anything, books, movies, documentary.. I will take them all!
What is the best advice you have ever received?
You have one life to live don’t waste it on things that don’t matter.
