CFPB Deletes 15 Years of Public Records, Including Supervisory Highlights

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has deleted thousands of webpages published before President Trump’s second term, erasing roughly 15 years of agency records that industry professionals have long used to gauge regulatory risk.

Among the casualties are all 35 Supervisory Highlights reports, the roughly quarterly publications the bureau had issued since 2012 to flag examination priorities, areas of concern, and anonymized corrective actions taken after examiners identified violations. Compliance teams across the ARM industry have treated those reports as one of the few reliable windows into how the bureau’s examiners actually think. They are now gone from the CFPB site and, in most cases, are not available anywhere else.

A consumer advocacy analysis put the total at roughly 3,830 deleted articles, including 2,119 newsroom posts, 1,676 blog entries, and the supervisory reports, removed in stages across May and early June. The Guardian, comparing the live site against Internet Archive captures, separately identified at least 2,228 deleted newsroom posts dating back to September 2010.

The purge swept up press releases, consumer advisories, congressional testimony, speeches, and policy and compliance explainers. The most common subjects in the deleted material were enforcement, mortgages, banking, and rulemaking, the same areas collection agencies, debt buyers, and creditors track to anticipate where the bureau is heading.

Acting Director Russell Vought has spent the past year scaling back the agency he was appointed to lead in February 2025. He has rescinded 67 pieces of Biden era guidance, dropped enforcement actions, and moved to cut headcount from 1,174 to 556, a reduction still contested in court. In October, Vought signaled he expected to close the bureau within two to three months. It remains open.

Consumer advocates frame the deletions as an effort to rewrite the agency’s story rather than routine housekeeping. Tom Feltner, a former CFPB policy adviser now at Americans for Financial Reform, said the goal appears to be replacing the bureau’s record with a narrative that casts it as a barrier to innovation. Adam Rust of the Consumer Federation of America described the move as part of a broader push to weaken the agency.

The overhaul also touched the complaint function. The Bureau, which logged a record 5.4 million complaints in 2025, has published guidance steering consumers to resolve disputes with credit and reporting agencies before contacting the CFPB. Credit and consumer reporting has historically driven the bulk of its complaint volume.

For an industry that reads the Bureau’s published record for signals, the archive that once supplied them has largely vanished.
