Chime Financial is laying off about 150 employees, roughly 10% of its workforce, as the fintech reorganizes around artificial intelligence, smaller teams, and increased in-office collaboration, according to multiple reports citing a memo from co-founder and CEO Chris Britt.
“The world is changing quickly and this means we need to keep evolving too,” Britt wrote in the memo, distributed Friday. He pointed to a “flatter structure and smaller squads,” arguing that leaner teams with fewer layers are moving faster and accomplishing more. He also said Chime would bring more teams back into its offices, and noted that “AI is changing what’s possible but requires new skills.”
The AI connection is not abstract. Chime says as many as 70% of its customer support interactions now run through voicebots and chatbots, with chatbots resolving about 75% of those conversations and voicebots resolving 66% of self-service calls. A Bain & Company report recently cited Chime as an example of a company that rebuilt customer service around AI rather than layering the technology onto existing workflows. On its first-quarter earnings call, the company said AI-assisted coding jumped from roughly 29% to 84% of code shipped internally over four months, helping product velocity while keeping headcount growth flat.
Britt also framed the cuts as public-company discipline. Chime, which went public last year and counted 1,500 employees as of December 31, “must accelerate growth while continuing to demonstrate operating discipline,” he wrote.
The move fits a broader pattern across fintech. Block announced roughly 4,000 cuts in February, Crypto.com laid off about 180 in March, Coinbase trimmed 700 in May, and Robinhood is cutting 10% of staff. Visa confirmed last week it is eliminating about 2,600 jobs, cuts reportedly enabled in part by AI. American tech companies have shed close to 140,000 jobs this year amid record AI spending.
Chime’s bot-driven contact model mirrors the automation calculus playing out in ARM contact centers, where AI deployment increasingly determines staffing levels, skill requirements, and cost structures. The open question, at Chime and everywhere else, is whether retraining existing talent proves more sustainable than cutting it.
