- Asta Funding, a debt buyer and collection firm, announced its earnings yesterday for the quarter ending June 30. Net income, or profits, at the company was $161,000 in the three-month period, compared with $4,687,000 in the same quarter of 2014. The company did not offer any reasoning in its press release announcing its financial results for the dramatic decrease in profits.
- Four collection agencies earned $7.5 million in revenue last year collecting on delinquent accounts for the county clerk’s office in Miami, Florida. Nearly one in three residents of Miami-Dade County are driving on a suspended license, about 550,000 people, and 77% of those people had their licenses suspended for non-payment of fees.
- PRA Group posted a profit of $51.4 million in the three-month period ending June 30, up 37% from the same quarter last year.
- NelNet, a student loan servicer, has agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit for $4.5 million for alleged debt-collection violations, including placing calls without consent and contacting the wrong borrowers.
- From ACA International: Four collection agencies have asked to be added to the lawsuit against the Federal Communications Commission for overstepping its authority in amending the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.
